The Neuroscience and Pharmacotherapy of Anxiety Related Disorders (1.5 Hours)

Dr. Casey McDougall is the Training Director of the Postdoctoral M.S. Program in Clinical Psychopharmacology.  He is also noted as the Program Instructor and Clinical Supervisor of Record. Dr. Casey McDougall is a prescribing psychologist in New Mexico and a licensed psychologist in Minnesota. He earned a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of North Dakota and Postdoctoral Masters in Clinical Psychopharmacology from Alliant International University.  He completed his Pre-Doctoral Internship through the UNM Health Sciences Center; followed by his Post-Doctoral training with the Pueblo of Acoma.  He is now the fulltime Training Director for the RXPP Program and Full Professor within the CEP Dept. In collaboration with the private practice of iNetMed Rx2 Inc., Dr. McDougall is also a prescribing psychologist and consultant for the Rehabilitation Hospital of Southern New Mexico. Previously he worked for Indian Health Service as the Behavioral Health Director at the Red Lake Hospital (Red Lake Nation; Red Lake, MN).  He is a Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom III and Direct Descendant of the White Earth (Nation) Band of Chippewa where his father is enrolled.  He is a passionate Minnesota Vikings fan and is currently teaching himself how to play the guitar. About This Workshop

The purpose of this workshops to expose the audience to, or review, the basic principles, neuropathways, and mechanisms involved in the neurotransmission of anxiety related disorders.  Moreover, attendees will learn which pharmacotherapy interventions may best augment or supplement psychological treatment. Finally, in the scope of psychopharmacology, participants will become familiar with what computer/phone based applications are used as clinical reference best practices.


Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. List three (Central Nervous System) subcortical correlates associated with anxiety disorders
  2. List three components of Hypothalamus-Pituitary -Adrenal Axis; and the difference between adaptive and maladaptive feedback loops.
  3. Name at least three neurotransmitters involved anxiety
  4. List three mechanisms of action of psychopharmacological interventions used in the treatment of anxiety disorders.
  5. Match at least three anxiolyitic drugs; as indicated for specific anxiety disorders, on the spectrum of anxiety disorders.
  6. List at least one, FDA approved, pharmacological interventions for Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
  7. List at least two, FDA approved, pharmacological interventions for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
  8. Identify at least two computer based/phone applications used as a clinical reference information on drugs, diseases, diagnostics and patient management
