About This Workshop

As the Covid-19 virus pandemic spread across the country, psychotherapists abruptly moved their sessions from in-person meetings to online platforms. Clinicians quickly resolved issues related to which online platform to use or how to adapt paperwork and contracts with clients. However, many continue to struggle with the impersonal nature of screen use, personal and collective biases around providing therapy online, the lack of actual f2f embodiment when providing treatment, and the other dynamics related to interventions or delivery of services. This workshop intends to refresh and upgrade the efficacy of psychotherapy services by focusing on practical guidelines related to the clinician’s intent, frame, presence, and attunement when practicing online. The first portion of the training will be didactic followed by a one-hour clinical demonstration and discussion.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. Analyze the impact of their own biases regarding the use of computers to provide psychotherapy services.
  2. Describe, compare, and contrast experiences of therapists who have transitioned to online services successfully and unsuccessfully.
  3. Identify features that set the frame for more effective online therapy.
  4. List characteristics that foster presence, attunement, holding, and emotional regulation when working online.
