How Training Psychologists in Clinical Psychopharmacology Can Improve Patient Care Across Iowa (1.5 Hours)

Dr. Steinman is a core faculty member of the CSPP-Alliant International University’s Master of Science in Clinical Psychopharmacology (MSCP) program and was Program Director from 2017-2022. She served as the President of APA’s Society for Prescribing Psychology (Division 55) in 2019 and as Past President for two terms from 2020-2021.

Dr Steinman serves as chair of the Division 55 Training Program Director Council and is a member of the Diversity, Research, Bylaws and Membership Councils and Committees. She was a coordinator and co-author of the Division’s Specialty Petition to APA’s CRSPPP, allowing Clinical Psychopharmacology to be recognized as a specialty and laying the path towards Board Certification with ABPP. She also is the founding chair of Division 55’s Legislative and Social Action Committee.

Dr. Steinman serves as chair of the Hawaiʻi Psychological Association’s RxP Sub-Committee and is actively engaged in efforts to bring prescriptive authority for qualified psychologists to Hawai`i, across the country around the world.

Dr Steinman currently works with documentary film maker Darnell Walker to chronicle and identify the need for better mental health care around the US and in South Africa.

Dr Steinman served as the Coordinator of the MSCP program at the University of Hawai`i - Hilo’s Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy for seven years. Dr Steinman teaches Biochemistry, Pathophysiology and Research Methodology for Alliant and has taught similar courses as an Adjunct Instructor for The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and UH Hilo Daniel K Inouye College of Pharmacy.

About This Workshop

Psychologists will be exposed to information regarding medication treatment and alternative treatment methods for diverse populations.


Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:
  1. Identify and compare the different Clinical Psychopharmacology training programs.
  2. Recognize and address cultural competency issues that have an impact on medication adherence and patient success in diverse cultural, racial and ethnic populations.
  3. Explain how Clinical Psychopharmacology training contributes to improved patient care and inter-professional communication about patient care.
